Pictures

I now know why there are so few pictures in books and articles:
There is a space quota, and images are sometimes heavily penalized.

A picture cannot just look good anymore, but must really convey the space of the hundred words it obstructs...

But a picture tells a thousand words... at 12 words per line, that's 80 lines of text, which, in a standard journal format, is around a page and a half.

yes, but the difficulty of these thousand words is that they are not all central to the central topic and wish to be elaborated upon.
